ProKids' strength lies in the ordinary citizens who volunteer their time to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children to help them find safe, permanent homes where they can thrive. What exactly do these advocates (Court Appointed Special Advocates) do?

Family court judges assign CASA advocates to foster care cases. They conduct research on the background of the cases, review documents and interview all of the parties involved. They talk with the parents, family members, social workers, school officials, health providers and others who are knowledgeable of the child's history. They then report to the court, providing information that will help the judge make an informed decision regarding the child's welfare and custody, and recommend what they believe is best for the child.

CASAs often are instrumental in assuring that a child or family receives the services the court has ordered, such as substance abuse counseling or special education testing. A CASA monitors the child's situation to make sure he or she remains safe. The CASA may be the only constant the child knows as he or she moves throught the bureaucratic maze of the child welfare system.

ProKids is always in need of more volunteers - training provided. Please call 281-2000 for more information.
